What Villaverde is like

Villaverde is where Madrid's rent map bottoms out, which is why it comes up again and again when someone searches with a budget that Madrid city, searched the usual way, won't stretch to.

What almost nobody considers is the train. The C3 and C4 Cercanías lines reach Atocha in a quarter of an hour and Sol or Nuevos Ministerios in just over twenty minutes, with trains every few minutes at rush hour. Compared with chaining two Metro lines from a supposedly more central neighborhood, it often comes out ahead.

The honest counterweight is the surroundings. Villaverde grew up around industry and still lives alongside it: some stretches of street aren't pleasant to walk, and the district is sliced by infrastructure. Look at specific addresses, because the gap between one neighborhood and the next is bigger here than the shared name suggests.

What works in its favor

Cercanías, which is faster

Four commuter-rail stations in the district and fifteen minutes to Atocha. In real journey time it beats the Metro from quite a few more central neighborhoods.

The widest margin

It's where your money buys the most space anywhere in the municipality. The difference from the centre isn't ten percent; it's on another scale.

Neighborhoods on a village scale

Villaverde Alto keeps its old centre, with a square, a market and its own fiestas. It's not a housing estate.

What to know before moving

• The district is cut up by railway lines and industrial land. Getting around inside Villaverde can be harder than getting out of it.
• Nightlife and leisure are limited, so many plans end up in the centre. Count that journey home when you work out your week.
