What Carabanchel is like

Carabanchel is the example everyone reaches for when talking about neighborhoods that change, and for once it's the right one. What began as cheap warehouses rented by artists who could no longer afford the centre became a network of studios, and everything else followed: cafés roasting their own coffee, bookshops, bars that are neither old-school local nor chain.

What's interesting is that the change hasn't erased what was there. The same street still has a hardware shop, a fishmonger and a bar where the menú del día — the set lunch — costs what it did five years ago. That mix is exactly why so many people in their twenties end up staying after moving here for the price.

Its transport has an underrated advantage: line 6 is a circle, so from Carabanchel you can reach Moncloa, Cuatro Caminos or Méndez Álvaro without going through the centre. If your job or university isn't at Sol — and it almost never is — that's worth more than the straight-line distance.

What works in its favor

Three Metro lines and a train

One of the best-connected outer districts: line 5 into the centre, line 6 to cross the city without passing through Sol, line 11 towards Plaza Elíptica — plus the C5 commuter train.

A scene that already exists

The studios and galleries around Oporto and Marqués de Vadillo have been open for years. This isn't a neighborhood promising to become fashionable: that already happened.

Forty hectares inside the district, with real pine woodland. Living ten minutes' walk from something like that changes your whole week.

What to know before moving

• Prices have risen faster than in neighboring districts, precisely because of all of the above. They are still below the Madrid city average, but the gap narrows every year.
• Carabanchel Alto is a long way from the heart of the district. Living on line 11 and working on line 1 can mean a long journey, even within the same district.

Does Carabanchel make sense for you?

It depends on where you need to be each week and how often. Carabanchel can be an excellent decision or an expensive mistake; your routine makes the difference.
