What Leganés is like

Leganés, along with Móstoles, is the classic gateway to Madrid for people arriving on a small budget. Rents are among the lowest in the metropolitan area, and the town has everything: a hospital, a campus, shops, sports centres.

What sets it apart from other southern towns is that Metro line 10 reaches Leganés Central. That means a direct Metro ride to Tribunal or Plaza de España without the MetroSur detour, as well as the C5 Cercanías line, which gets you to Príncipe Pío in twenty-five minutes.

Carlos III University's technology campus brings a large student population, and with it a room market that moves very fast in September. If you'll be sharing, searching in July rather than September makes a big difference to what you find.

What to know before moving

• The town is large and spread out; Zarzaquemada and La Fortuna are worlds apart. The stop nearest you shapes your daily life.
• Getting to the north of Madrid always takes a change. If your main destination is Chamartín or Las Tablas, do the maths carefully.
