What Ciudad Lineal is like

Ciudad Lineal is what remains of Arturo Soria's urban experiment: a city designed as a ribbon along a single avenue. It didn't turn out as planned, but it left a pattern of wide, tree-lined streets that lets the district breathe in a way the centre no longer can.

For flat-hunters, the main argument is space. A budget that buys a studio in Chamberí can reach a two-bedroom with a terrace here. And line 5 — Pueblo Nuevo, Ciudad Lineal, Suanzes — takes you into the centre with no changes.

Be clear that you're trading noise for calm in both directions. It's a residential district, not a place with its own scene. Many people choose it for exactly that after two or three years in the centre; others find it too still.

What works in its favor

Genuinely quiet

The district began as a garden city and much of it keeps that scale: open blocks, inner courtyards and little through traffic.

Larger flats

Homes built here in the 1960s and 70s are bigger than in the south. It's one of the few places where a three-bedroom flat is still realistic.

Four Metro lines

Line 5 into the centre, line 7 to the north and east, and lines 4 and 2 along its edges. Very few addresses are far from a station.

What to know before moving

• It is long and narrow: two addresses in the same district can be four kilometres apart. The district name tells you little about your commute.
• Nightlife is thin. If you go out a lot on weeknights you'll be taking the Metro home, and line 5 closes at night like every other line.

Does Ciudad Lineal make sense for you?

It depends on where you need to be each week and how often. Ciudad Lineal can be an excellent decision or an expensive mistake; your routine makes the difference.
